Metzelder: "I want to win all the titles we have in play this year"

.. "desidero vincere tuttti i titoli che si giocheranno qst anno"

Christoph Metzelder knew he wanted to become a football player thanks to Karlheinz Foster. When he was just six, he found a player card of Foster, who quickly became his idol. Metzelder grew up playing the sport in the streets of Haltern, Germany. He signed for Real Madrid last March, and he started learning Spanish the minute he knew he would be living in Spain. He is also and avid reader and spends most of his free time with a book in hand. Realmadrid.com and RealmadridTV decided there would be no better way to commemorate his 27th birthday than by giving him his first book in Spanish.

When did you realise you were destined to play football?
When I found a playing card of a German player during the 1986 World Cup. I started playing for my first team a few months later.
Who was your idol when you were a kid?
Karlheinz Förster. I don’t think he is known here, but he played in the Spanish World Cup in 1982 and was a famous German defender.

How did you feel the first time you set foot on the Bernabéu turf?
It was extraordinary to be there and to belong to his great club. I was very proud to have been presented by Alfredo Di Stéfano and President Ramón Calderón. I am very happy because I had the chance to sign on a few years ago, but I was seriously injured. I fortunately had another opportunity and now I’m here.

You’ve been studying Spanish for a few months now. Is learning the language and important part of the adaptation process?
Learning the language and being able to speak it as soon as possible is important to feel comfortable here and in the city. If you’re okay in the city, you’re okay in the club. It was a great idea and I learned fast.

How do you feel about the city and the club? Have you adjusted well?
I live in the city centre but haven’t had much time to explore. I hope to do so soon because there are lots of places I would like to get to know.

Are you surprised that your coach’s gameplan is more offensive than defensive, a trait very uncharacteristic like of Germans?
He’s not very German. He’s about 60% Spanish because he’s spent so much time in this country. I think he’s more Spanish than German because of the way he plays.

What does he ask of each of you?
He obviously asks that we remain disciplined and in form. He is very familiar with the club and was a great player in his day. He knows how to deal with superstars. I think he’s doing a great job.

It looks like there’s great team spirit. What’s the atmosphere in the locker room like?
It’s great. There are some very strong players who think differently and come from different countries. We all know that there are many games and that we have a few players recovering from injuries now. We all know we’re all needed. It’s fantastic.

What does wearing number ‘21’ mean to you?
I started my career at Dortmund by wearing it. It wasn’t intentional, but I’ve always tried to hold on to it.

What differences are there between Spain’s Primera Division and the Bundesliga, and Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund?
This is a great club. Borussia is a great club in Germany and very famous in Europe, but it’s very different. The staff here is great, the team is financially secure and, of course, there are better players. Compared to the Bundesliga, the Primera Division is a lot faster, especially in attack.

What player has surprised you the most?
Raúl, of course. He’s the symbol of this team and the club. The way he plays and the prepares all season are extraordinary.

You came close to winning the World Cup with Germany. How does being so close to the title feel?
Losing the 2002 final was a huge disappointment. Brazil was the favourite, but we came close to beating them. We also came close in the German World Cup, but Italy was the strongest team and deserved to win. Maybe I’ll have another chance in the future.

Not many people gave Germany a chance in the 2006 World Cup, but you got fans hooked by the way you played. What was the key to the team’s success?
The home team always have an advantage, especially in a country like Germany where football is the top sport. I think we had a great team with young players, and I hope we do well in the next World Cup.

How do you like playing alongside Fabio Cannavaro?
He’s an amazing player who has a ton of experience. Playing next to him allows me to improve on a constant basis, and I am honoured to play by his side.

You had a serious injury that required a long recovery. How did you deal?
I don’t know how I dealt with it when I look back on it. It was very hard, but I am happy to have gotten my career underway again. Many players can’t return after a two-year injury, but I was lucky to sign for Real Madrid and I am happy.

What do you dream of achieving with Real Madrid?
Winning many titles, like all those we have in play this year.

You’re 27-years old. Did you expect to be doing what you’re doing at this stage of your life?
Not at all. Every kid tries to play and improve enough to reach a professional team, but I never expected to reach Real Madrid.

What do you think playing in Olympiacos’ stadium will be like?
I think it will be very difficult because they’ll be playing with one more man, their fans. They will be very loud, but we have to be prepared to beat them on their home turf.

How important is being first in the group?
It’s tough because you never know what might happen in the next round, but it’s very important for this team to be first in the group and to win all the remaining matches.

Real Madrid are leaders in the League and the Champions League, so do you understand where all the criticism stems from?
I haven’t been here long, but I already understand more or less what goes on around this club. I’ll stick up for the team when we win 1-0 because winning matches and titles is all that matters. That said, I also understand that people want to see pretty football.

Will the great performance against Valencia help with the Sevilla match?
I think it gave us a lot of confidence. The first half was near-perfect. Playing in Valencia the way we did was fantastic.

Does the coaching situation in Sevilla play to your advantage?
They’re a strong team. They proved it last year by making a name for themselves in Europe. We’re aware of their potential and we have to be careful.
